A blank page and a blank canvas have much in common, both waiting to be transformed into something that transforms and transports an audience. In this workshop, we will examine different techniques employed by visual artists and apply those to writing moving, vivid, evocative prose. Just as an artist must choose and mix the right colors in the right places, the writer must do the same with words. We will discuss the use of colorful, colored and colorless words, sharpening detail, creating depth of field, manipulating texture, heightening contrast and more, and we will complete in-class exercises practicing these skills.
