commented on Ambivalence

This course will (maybe) explore different concepts and theories of ambivalence, typically defined as "simultaneous and contradictory attitudes or feelings (as attraction and repulsion) toward an object, person, or action;" "continual fluctuation (as between one thing and its opposite);" and "uncertainty as to which approach to follow."

In addition to researching and reading what various contemporary thinkers have to say about ambivalence, we will also attempt to debate the relative pros and cons of ambivalence as a state/position/strategy. What is dangerous, or, alternately, enchanting, about ambivalence? How might we theorize an ethics of uncertainty?

Readings will include excerpts from USC professor Karen Pinkus' new book on alchemy and ambivalence, as well as selections from psychoanalytic, queer, trans and other works relevant to the topic. Suggestions encouraged!

Last minute, I know, but I thought some of you might be interested in "Neoliberalism and Human Capital," starting today at 3 PM at TPS in Chinatown! Info here: http://la.thepublicschool.org/class/1897.

hi all,

a belated follow-up; just wanted to post a couple links that will help us move forward with T/P-related offshoots & c:

solomon proposed a class on the manifesto stemming from our discussion on february 13th; i will do my best to organize this ASAP.

chandler created a theory/practice tumblr page to which we can add T/P-related quotes to our hearts' content(s).

and chandler turned me on to fuck theory which is at times hilarious.

more soon, from everyone!

Ambi-valent friends,

Yesterday's class was awesome!

A giant thanks to Karen for giving us a window into her work, and to all participants for facilitating what proved to be a wide-ranging and provocative discussion. Fantastic! (I am not, in this case, ambivalent.)

I am, however, uncertain as to how to proceed with next week's class, and implore you to help me reach resolution. As I've mentioned, the Continental Drift will be happening at The Public School this Saturday and Sunday (the 27th and 28th). For more information on Brian Holmes look here and for information about past Drifts (at 16 Beaver in New York) look here.

Just a reminder that Ambivalence will be meeting *at the MAG* this afternoon at our usual time (3-5 PM). We will be joined by Karen Pinkus, author of Alchemical Mercury: A Theory of Ambivalence, and will be meeting in a screening room to the right side of the "Actions, Conversations, and Intersections" exhibition - if you can't find us, ask at the front desk and they will direct you. Hope to see you soon!

made a note: Totem and Taboo

Still reading Totem and Taboo, and just came upon the following: "Almost everything that might be asserted in general about totemism is doubtful; even the above statement of it, taken from an article by Frazer in 1887, cannot escape the criticism that it expresses an arbitrary preference of the author and would be challenged to-day by Frazer himself, who has repeatedly changed his view on the subject" [n. 18].

Note 18 reads: "In connexion with such a change of opinion Frazer made the excellent statement: 'That my conclusions on these difficult questions are final, I am not so foolish as to pretend. I have changed my views repeatedly, and I am resolved to change them again with every change of the evidence, for like a chameleon the inquirer should shift his colours with the shifting colours of the ground he treads.' Preface to Vol. I, Totemism and Exogamy, 1910.

All this, of course, from Totem and Taboo, 1913.

This class would be a space for parents and prospective parents to meet and talk about how we envision applying, or apply, our study of theory to our roles as parents. We would meet every other week or once a month for at least a few months and would look at gender theory, queer theory, theories of oppression and expression – anything which seems to apply to child rearing.

Fantastic! I'll let you know as soon as I hear back from Julie on her availability:)

commented on Theory / Practice

This would be an open-ended reading and discussion group centered around the relationship between theory and practice. The topic is purposefully large and the class would be structured as a monthly or bi-monthly meeting to discuss a reading chosen by the group. This format will allow the class to explore and tease out these relationships in philosophy, politics, ethics, arts practice, etc, etc. Hopefully by looking at the issue from a number of angles, domains, and styles of thought, we will find new connections and new articulations.

Readings may include:

  • Marx
  • Spivak
  • Rorty
  • Habermas
  • Laclau
  • Kant
  • Speaks
  • Derrida
  • Aristotle
  • Dewey
  • Marcuse
  • Lukács
  • Gadamer

and on and on.

OK! This class has been rescheduled for Saturday, February 13th, from 12 PM - 2 PM at The Public School. I hope you all can make this new day/time! "Reading" & assignment remain the same - the Marx quote posted below and excerpts/snippets relating to theory/practice.
