Learn how to drink like a Public School pro, order "Scorpions" from Hop Louie without getting tossed out, stubble over to Mountain Bar, and drag yourself to Spring Street Smokehouse BBQ for micro brew. Extra credit for obscure Chinatown Gems.
All while enjoying the company of your newly found Public School Friends.
Bike it or Hike it, no driving allowed!
If we get really adventurous, and/or everybody's on a bike, we could extend our reach into Downtown.
A basic introduction to using mySQl database. This will be an absolute beginner class focusing on getting a database established, adding some tables, and running some multi-table queries in SQL. Just enough knowledge to get you started... :)
We'll also cover integrating it with PHP and show how to install something like a Wordpress blog.
mySQL can be downloaded from here for free:
Get a basic iPhone app up and running. Cover broad strokes of the iPhone SDK. Build an app. Watch it run on your phone.
Requirements:
iPhone SDK (which includes Xcode) already installed before class, both can be downloaded for free from http://developer.apple.com
Familiarity with programming. (if you've never programmed before, this class probably isn't for you. That said you don't need to be a objective C or Java programmer to take the class)
we would write a virus especially for phones. it would be an arguably fun virus so everyone with phones would voluntarily infect themselves. maybe other people would hear about this cool virus some people had and they'd try and get it too. actually, no. maybe that's more of a game than a virus.
What could possibly go wrong?
In computing, regular expressions provide a concise and flexible means for identifying strings of text of interest, such as particular characters, words, or patterns of characters. Regular expressions are written in a formal language that can be interpreted by a regular expression processor, a program that either serves as a parser generator or examines text and identifies parts that match the provided specification.
The class would teach how to read and write Regular Expressions. Possibly extend and share knowledge about regex, ie resources (online or otherwise, integration with TextMate)
Here's a RFC822 pattern I use: $RFC822PAT = ' [\040\t]*(?:\([^\\\x80-\xff\n\015()]*(?:(?:\\[^\x80-\xff]|\([^\\\x80-\ xff\n\015()]*(?:\\[^\x80-\xff][^\\\x80-\xff\n\015()]*)*\))[^\\\x80-\xf f\n\015()]*)*\)[\040\t]*)*(?:(?:[^(\040)<>@,;:".\\\[\]\000-\037\x80-\x
This class will cover how to write and prepare a business plan for either raising outside capital for your venture, or doing a 'sanity' check for your own idea prior investing your own time and money.
Business Plans are simple conceptually. The difficult part is all the homework that needs to be done in order to prepare the final plan. This course will cover the simple parts so that when you do your own due diligence you'll know how to incorporate it into a business plan that is readable and understandable to an audience other than yourself. Sure you have a great idea, but can you prove it to your investors with a plan showing how you are going to execute it in a way that doesn't bankrupt everybody involved??
We'll cover: Marketing Plan, Management & Operations, Competition Analysis, Product/Service Plan, Growth Plan, Operations and Controls, Contingency Plan and Schedule. While it' unlikely we'll be able to cover everything in the same depth as a multi-year MBA program, we should be able to hit the highlights enough to get you on the right path.
Learn how to prepare a cash flow statement for use in a business plan or analyzing how a business idea will work in reality prior to launch even if it's your own money.
One of the most important components of a business plan is a cash flow analysis. This is often the first part of your business plan that any serious investor will read and demonstrates your understanding of the proposed venture and the costs associated with launching the initial stages. A poorly executed cash flow statement is like walking into a room full of investors with you pants down and toilet paper hanging out the back of your underwear. Not very professional. Learn how to avoid that!!
The class will cover the mechanics of making a cash flow statement in Excel as well as the type of detail that should be present and the supporting materials to back up your claims.
With a good cash flow statement and a solid set of assumptions, you should have a good idea of what the "entrepreneur's bet" is for your project. This is the amount of money you'll need in order to make it through the initial stages before the venture becomes cash flow positive.
This class will be a prerequisite class for the General Business Plan class I'm proposing.
Requirements: computer with spreadsheet software. (Microsoft Excel or Open Office Spreadsheet are fine.)
Both Mac OS X and Linux share a similar shell environment. (command line text interface to the system.)
Some truly powerful things can be done in shell, but before you get to them you need to know the basics. This class will cover getting the Terminal running, listing directories, moving through directories, creating and deleting directories, changing file and group permissions, moving files, deleting files and running very simple shell scripts.
These simple procedures are very useful if you do any type of web development, even if it's just graphic design.
By the end of the class, you should be able to comfortably navigate by command line around your operating system and understand what the various groups and permissions mean.
This will only be for Mac or Linux users. Bring a computer.
I can offer to teach this class.
Yes, it's great that a lot of the tutorials show you the exact wiring layout when you're just learning, but after a while, you'll need to learn how to read a schematic to understand how more complex projects work. Learn the difference and relationship between a connection diagram and its logic symbol.
This class will cover how to interpret the various symbols found on a common schematic, such as resistors, capacitors, transistors, diodes, ICs, inductors, etc. as well as how to interpret what all the lines mean and how it all fits together in relation to the actual wiring of a project.
Also will cover how to read a datasheet for some common chips used with Arduino based projects. Ever wonder what Vcc and Iout mean?
Learn the basics of how to surface mount soldering. Covers where to acquire the materials, techniques and various considerations necessary when using surface mount parts.
Possibly also cover reflow and reworking for when mistakes are made. Maybe even a demo of a DIY reflow oven for doing small run fabing.
Brief overview of the process of converting solid biomass (think the stuff that goes in the green trash bin) to a form of natural gas called syn gas. This is a carbon-neutral to carbon-negative way of reclaiming energy from solid biomass in a manner that can easily be used in a standard internal combustion engine.
Unlike bio-diesel or ethanol which uses only a portion of the planet, the gasification process makes full use of the entire plant. On scales beyond DIY, it can be used to convert municipal waste to energy. We'll be focusing on DIY scale to run engines or generators.
Lecture comes from work done on The Mechabolic, a project at 2007 Burning Man and the continuing DIY research being conducted at The Shipyard in Berkeley CA.While we will not build a working gasifier in class, simple plans will be presented for those interested in pursuing it further.
I distill the turn-of-the-century liquor absinthe in a traditional manner. This would be a brief description of the history of absinthe, its intoxicating properties, and how best to go about distilling it, including a description of the equipment necessary and tips on distilling that don't usually make it into the recipes. To keep the audience interested I would bring a bottle for tasting purposes.
