This class would be a two-part class based on reading theoretical materials about the possibilities and challenges of communicating with non-human intelligences such as animals (dolphins, chimpanzees etc...) extraterrestrial beings (SETI program, biological spores), & building non-human intelligences such as AI or synthetic cells.  (And if this proposal is life-centric or something like that, fine we can talk about attempts to "communicate" with rocks or whatever -- panpsychism).

In this class we would learn about the coffee roasting process, bean selection, roast profiles, and how to apply all this in a home roasting environment. I can provide a variety of home coffee roasters which we will use in class; from the dirt cheap to the moderately expensive. Participants can either bring in their own green beans or if there is an interest as a group we can order a selection of beans for the class. If possible I would like to organize this as a two day program with the second class scheduled 24 or so hours after the first so that we can allow our roasts to properly rest and then try brewing them using a variety of processes (including espresso!).

(Rough draft written in only a few minutes! For sharing at the beginning of our workshop)

Everyone now wants to know how to remove themselves from social networks. It has become absolutely clear that our relationships to others are mere data points in the aggregation of marketing data. Political campaigns, the sale of commodities, the promotion of entertainment – this is the outcome of our expression of likes and affinities. And at what cost? The reward is obvious: we no longer have to tolerate advertisements for things for which we have no interest. Instead our social relations are saturated with public relations. But at least it is all interesting!

Unlike the old days, when we could invent online identities daily, our social networks today require fidelity between our physical self and our online self. The situation is unbearable.

hi guys-

i'm so happy to see that so many people are interested, but i'm going to have to cap the class at 25 students so that we can have discussions and interactive fun as opposed to big lectures.  please rsvp if you are sure you want one of those spots, and send me an email (dearface@gmail.com) if you know you need to miss any of the classes- that's fine if that's the case, i'd just like to know who to expect.

also- we have nearly 25 people who've rsvp'd already- so let us know if your plans have changed, or add your name to the list as soon as you're able!

thanks,

claire

An introduction to Bouldering.

By the end of this class you’ll be able to get up a climbing wall without worrying about looking like a dork. We’ll focus on using the least amount of energy in your movements and developing a sense of control over your body.

Roombas are the first commercially successful home robots, and they're awesome. There are all sorts of hacks that are possible on top of the Roomba technology. This class will help people get started with some of the most basic.
