Alter-Globalization meets on Wednesday night at 9pm... here are some notes about what we'll be discussing from Michael Wilson:
I think it would be great to discuss this article from Third Text on Wednesday: From Communism to Commons
This text is a conversation between David Riff and Dmitry Vilensky (Chto delat?), and they take up a lot of themes that have emerged in discussions among those involved in Beyond the UC Strikes over the past several months.
Hello!
I think this meeting is a good opportunity to re-start activity around these issues - with an eye toward more substantive considerations of cultural participation in the larger gatherings in Detroit and Oakland. On that score, future meetings might consider this text: Towards a theory of alter-globalism
Hope to see yall on Wed
Michael
it is the the dawn of time. the world is at war and we are both the bullets and the flesh. our people have found themselves cruelly thrown against the oppressive current of oppression. These waves have weakened our limbs, (as)salted our wounds and obliterated any hope for recovery. Our wills have become weak, and we are tired of this all-too-long struggle.
But today the hope that has eluded us throughout this never-ending era of persecution has manifested itself in the form of this manifesto. The injustice will end now. This manifesto will triumph over all we despise.
hello and thanks for showing interest in this course. it will be a two day class where day one consists of a brief presentation on coffee roasting and then free time where we will break up into groups and experiment with a number of different home roasting setups. by the end of the day we will have lots of coffee roasted and we will hopefully have a good working knowledge of the home roasting process. day two will consist of us brewing the coffee using a variety of coffee makers.
i will provide 5 different diy coffee roasting setups and we will order the beans as a group once we have a better idea how many people will be attending. i will also provide a vacuum pot, french press, and a manual drip, as well as a fancy grinder. if anyone has any other brewing devices you are encouraged to bring them in. i would be especially excited if anyone had an aeropress and/or a chemex.
just to be clear, day one is where all the roasting will take place.
a karaoke bar with a twist. bring favorite theory passages and attempt to read them in the voices of their authors while drinking cheap beverages.
readings in contemporary neoliberal thinkers and politicians. in this class we will look at and discuss american empire in the bush and obama eras and their use of classical neoliberalist strategies and tactics (as discussed in the prior neoliberalism class on the chicago school) both at home and abroad. particular attention could be paid to the 2008 crash and neoliberal responses to it.
Do you want to learn how to tap into your inner creative spirit, find your voice and write poetry? No? Good, neither do we.
This class is a one-night poetry writing workshop and reading based on techniques of depersonalization, the involuntary, the machinic & the random in poetic creation. The structure is as follows:
1. All participants, prior to the class will create 3 "poetic experiment structures" to bring in & share with other participants. These will guide the writing of depersonalized poems. These poetic-experiment structures must make some, or multiple aspect of the poet's production involuntary, haphazard or strictly determined and as such outside of the conscious control of the poet.
Examples:
a. Bring in a book. Have the poet write a poem consisting only of select words on a single page of that book. Or make the poet use all words in one paragraph.
I want to learn all about the parts of an engine, what they do, what they sound like when they're not working, etc. Would be great to have some working knowledge of a machine we use so often and rely on so much.
