typography

This course will be an introduction to the concepts, history, and practice of typography. It will survey traditional, modern, contemporary, and experimental approaches, progressing from the micro to the macro, from the level of the letter to the word to the page to the book.

The emphasis will be on introducing participants to as broad a range of ideas as possible and then suggesting possible avenues for further, in-depth study. The goal is to provide the means for creative people in other fields to begin to be typographically self-sufficient (rather than rely on professional design help).

Unfortunately, at the moment, there aren't enough people registered to cover the cost of the course (that would be 8 people). This means that we'll probably have to cancel the course as it's currently scheduled. We'll leave the registration open until tomorrow evening and see if we get to 8 people, but in the meantime, we wanted to let you know the situation. Obviously, if you've paid and the course is canceled, your money will be refunded!

Hello everyone,

If your typography skills haven't really improved in the two years since this class was originally scheduled (oh my) then I've got good news for you!

It has been rescheduled and will meet for 4 consecutive Sunday afternoons, beginning on January 24. The fee is $35.

Ask any burning questions that you have by posting them as comments here on the class web page.

Great just registerd!! I've been looking for a class like this for years. Any word on software or materials I should come prepped with?

Glad this is being offered. Are there any more details about what we'll be doing in the class?
Would this course be appropriate for someone who already has a working knowledge of typography?
Is it more of a workshop-situation or a survey/overview? I could really use a workshop/crit environment.

Definitely introductory; assumes little/no prior knowledge.

Basically, it will attempt to cram what would normally be a three/four-semester cycle at a design school into four weeks. It will therefore be necessarily "overviewish." We will cover a lot of ground and assume that participants can seek more depth in the directions that interest them.

As of right now, I am thinking the necessary tools will be pencil, eraser, ruler, scissors, glue.

Oh, regarding survey vs. studio, it will be a little of both. The appropriate balance will be figured out as we go along.

I'm signed up for the class. Any idea how long each session will run?

Also, my wife is interested in attending but will be out of town for the first session. Will she be too far behind, or should she sign up as well?

Probably 2-3 hours per week? Hard to tell until it gets going.

I don't think missing the first session would be a big problem, no.

A reminder that this class begins tomorrow at 2pm! (There are about 2 spots left, so if you're planning to attend you need to do the Google checkout thing)
You won't need to bring anything to the first class except yourselves and your watching Sean Deyoe shoes.

Hi everybody,

Sorry to say I am realizing that I severely underestimated both how long planning this bike ride thing would take and, more importantly, how ridiculously exhausted I would be after an extremely busy weekend. Anyway, yeah, NO WAY am I going to get that together by Wednesday. So I am just going to postpone that whole thing until after the class is over. This will give me more time to plan for class and more time to plan the bike ride. A win-win situation. (Also, some time to sleep; win-win-win.)

So, unless there is some conflict I cannot recall at the moment, I think the first of the three bike rides will happen Wednesday, February 17th.

Class will happen, as scheduled, this Sunday.
