Sadism & Masochism
proposed by Lisa
This course will cover a broad range of material relating to S & M. We will be reading critical texts, literary works, and practical guides to thinking through the histories and practices of sadism, masochism, and flagellation. Our second session will feature a guest lecturer from The Threshold Society, a non-profit educational and support organization for adults who have an interest in sado-masochism (http://www.threshold.org/public/index.html). In addition, we will have the opportunity to present a project from the class on December 6th at the University of California, San Diego as part of conference on desire and affect.

Maybe we can read (selections from) Deleuze's _Masochism: Coldness and Cruelty_ and von Sacher-Masoch's _Venus in Furs_. I think selections from both texts can elucidate one modality of SM (esp. the M), and this (specifically Deleuze's theory) can be discussed in relation to embodied, lived experience (von Sacher-Masoch's and other people's [hi]stories). Also, this would tie in well to Sade -- esp. his _120 Days of Sodom_, and we can view various artistic/filmic adaptations of Sade's (in)famous book. This, obviously, is my opinion ... 2 cents, or 25 cents. Again, an intertwining of theory, or philosophy, fiction, and lived experience (which can be an art).

Why a meeting at UCSD? What good hotels are nearby: that is the first place I taught as an adjunct: the academic way of life, par excellence. So, I am down for UCSD, but info on hotels would be nice. Also, carpooling?

Hi everyone,
I uploaded a couple more things for Sunday's class.
The first is:
Eroticism: Death & Sexuality (excerpt - Mysticism & Sensuality) by Georges Bataille
http://aaaarg.org/eroticism-death-sexuality-excerpt-mysticism-sensuality-2
The second is a short chapter from:
Parables For The Virtual (excerpt - The Bleed) by Brian Massumi
http://aaaarg.org/parables-for-the-virtual-excerpt-the-bleed
I know this may be too much for people to read for one class so please don't feel like you need to get through all of it. The Bataille can be skimmed. It touches upon some things that are brought up in the Introduction to "In Praise of the Whip." The Massumi text is about affect and staging which is one possible trajectory for our conversation.
Very much looking forward to Sunday evening!

So, the "Introduction" from _In Praise of the Whip_ and these last two (Bataille and Massumi) seem the most compelling and the most important to read "in depth" -- but this is not to say "to puncture" them, "penetrate" them, but rather glide across their (smooth and fleshy) surface/s and at times get sucked in, enveloped, but still without penetration and depth -- more like laying in the folds ... Or, is it just me?

I would say that all of Largier's material should be read "in depth" followed by Massumi, then Bataille. However, it does depend on what YOU and others in the class find most interesting. So if you feel like there is more to be found in another reading of the readings, feel free, and we'll see how the class will "glide" along.

BTW, we have a new location: The address is 972B Chung King Road, which is almost directly across the road from our previous location. The tricky part is that you have to enter through the back door, which is accessible from an alley behind the building. As you walk down the alley, keep your eye out for a big TELIC sign on the ground - the door next to it is the entrance and it will be open. Let us know if you have any anxieties about finding it, but we promise it will work out.
We actually have a mailbox at 972 Chung King Road with a map that explains all of this too.

Hi all,
I thought you might be interested in my upcoming class at TPS - Sedgwick: Touching Feeling. For the class, we'll be reading what I consider to be one of the most seminal (hee hee) queer theory texts produced this century. It will be fun, close reading, and will have much crossover with Caleb's S & M materials. Join me!
Best,
Sarah
