This is a project based class, to be completed in three sessions.
The class will organize a Continental Drift Seminar with theorist Brian Holmes to occur on February 27th and 28th.
(*more info on Brian Holmes, the drift and this particular drift below)
Goals of this class
Using the established structure of these seminars, the class will meet three times to organize;
1. a limited number of other speakers in addition to Brian Holmes.
2. a venue
3. publicity and outreach
4. a synopsis
5. a localized theoretical frame with the view on the global.
On Brian Holmes and the Continental Drift Series.
Brian Holmes, is an art critic, cultural theorist and activist, particularly involved with the mapping of contemporary capitalism.
The Continental Drift is a nomadic seminar organized in DIY spaces. The first Drift occured at 16 Beaver in NY (2005) and has been held there and elsewhere since.
The Drift is a conversation around particular elements of neoliberalism.
This Drift
Brian asks that we organize the drift with these texts in mind;
The class should focus on the last two pathways (critique and change)

He also asks us to consider this text:

Is the idea for the venue for the continental drift to be other than the public school?

I'm having trouble accessing the Antonio Negri article "Keynes and the Capitalist Theory of the State post-1929." The website linked in the Pathways article does not seem to work. Does anyone have a copy?

Sorry, since I'm new, not exactly sure which readings we are to have read.

Suggested readings are:
http://brianholmes.wordpress.com/2009/10/25/four-pathways-through-chaos/
and:
http://brianholmes.wordpress.com/2009/01/19/book-materials/
and: Brian Holmes, The UC Strike: at Last, the shit hits the Fan in California,
to be found here:

(its part of the newpaper art work/pdf)
if you want to do additional reading, follow his suggestions for pathway 3 and 4....
Venue/location:
the class will figure out the venue. But the public school is a strong option. We would need to confirm with the Public School whether or not that weekend (Feb 27/28) is open. Sean--would this be even an option?

I think it makes sense to keep the question of "where" open, just in case the desire to hold the drift elsewhere comes up in the planning. That said, I personally think TPS makes a good space, and we'd be excited to host it, but let's see where planning discussion takes us.
Practically, the 27th and 28th are MOSTLY wide open. The one exception is at some point, somewhere on Sunday, there is an Ambivalence class:
http://la.thepublicschool.org/class/1765
That class is happening at TPS and/or MAG at 3pm, but there are a few options (Ambivalence in the kitchen; broadcasting Drift into MAG if it is topically appropriate; only doing the class on the 28th at MAG and not streaming it to TPS; streaming it to TPS but turning volume down; shifting times; etc.) Sarah is planning that class so she'll have more to say.

whoops.
1000 appologies.
Please read this essay instead of the long sectioned book.
http://brianholmes.wordpress.com/2009/02/27/guattaris-schizoanalytic-car...
Brian asked us to familiarize ourselves with the book, but, well, its a book.
This, above, is much shorter and more to the point.
Again. Deepest appologies for the confusion.

A reminder that we are having the first meeting tomorrow (Sunday) from 3-6pm.
We'll be meeting in the back space (if the weather is bad) or out front (if the weather is good) and will move inside to the regular space by 4pm.

Hello planners,
I may not be able to make it to tomorrow's meeting, so wanted to assure you in advance that we can absolutely have the Drift at TPS on the 28th (if that's what is decided) even though Ambivalence is also scheduled for that day. Any of the options Sean mentioned for how to work the two happenings together are more than possible; I think we should decide what's most desirable when the outlines of both the Drift and Ambivalence become clearer (i.e. after a couple planning meetings and after I've progressed further in constructing the class:). At this point I most like the idea of broadcasting the Drift into the MAG in lieu of/as Ambivalence's final session - I'm convinced that there's little chance the Drift could NOT be topically appropriate. But again, this depends on how Ambivalence plays out; we may not know until the course has already begun...
In any case, 28th OK by me! And if you don't see me tomorrow in person, please keep me posted on plans!
All the best,
S

hi everyone,
Just to recap, we agreed to depart a bit from the existing Continental Drift structure to incorporate a more participatory / non-hierarchical model, closer to how the Public School usually operates rather than a traditional presenter / audience structure. We looked at the text, selected, and scheduled the following themes, which we can refine in conversation with Brian. We
Day 1 (focused on analysis / Pathway 3):
1. Crisis / Financialization / (Consumerized Dissent) - possible off-site meeting at the Nokia Center
2. Precarity / Flexibility / Shadow Economies
3. Dissociative Collectivity / "Public"
(Mundane life outside of capital; i.e. what are you doing at 5:30pm?)
4. Brian Holmes lecture
Day 2 (moving forward / Pathway 4):
1. Extra-institutional spaces and practices / Inside vs. Outside
2. Collective Speech / Occupation
3. Autonomy / The possibility of escape
4. Shareable Territory / Limits to capital
5. The absurd
(ending with) Brian Holmes lecture
These categories probably make most sense in the context of the discussion, and I imagine they'll become clearer once we attach facilitators and readings to each.
See you next week,
Liz

Thanks, Liz; this is super helpful, especially for those of us who couldn't make it. Will next week's planning session be same day/time, right after Immaterial Labor and Biopolitics?
18 Jan 2010 12:26AM
Next meeting is Sunday 1.24 at 11am.

Ah! Thanks:)

Hey everyone,
I totally forgot this yesterday, but Telic has a Board meeting on Sunday at 10am, so not only is the main space not available, but I can't make it then either. Here are a couple choices to make the plan-changing as painless as possible:
a) Saturday at 4pm (immediately after Immaterial Labor and Biopolitics)
b) meet at 11am like we planned, but somewhere else (our basement is a possibility, but really who wants to spend their morning there?)
18 Jan 2010 11:40AM
Given we had so few people for the first meeting, it doesn't make sense (to me) to plan the new meeting for a day when someone (Sean) definitely cannot attend.
I would prefer Saturday at 4pm if these are the only two options.
How long are the Telic meetings usually?
18 Jan 2010 3:17PM
Actually, nevermind. The board meeting is over at noon, sofor the sake of keeping is easy, let's say the second meeting for planning the continental drift is Sunday from noon-2pm (because there is a typography class at 2). If the lost hour is a problem, then we can continue discussions outside, in back, in basement, etc.
18 Jan 2010 5:27PM
Is it possible to watch/join the meeting on Skype?
21 Jan 2010 3:57AM
Ok, a reminder that we're meeting tomorrow at noon! (There is a typography class beginning at 2pm so hopefully we can jump right into it).
We've got the sections for the two days that we sent to Brian - maybe we could begin with impassioned arguments for additions or omissions? Also, ideas for people who will be facilitating the discussion for each section. And perhaps some more thought about site visits for the two mornings?
I think we could set the goal of having (a) finalized sections and sites (b) one or two people for each section (c) a very rough invitation draft by the end of tomorrow. I haven't consulted anyone else on these goals or outlines, so feel free to jump in and correct me.
23 Jan 2010 3:42PM
@ehsan, with these planning meetings, i think setting up tech might inhibit our process a little bit, but we'll discuss doing it in the future at the meeting tomorrow.
but, tomorrow, i do think we ought to talk about the drift itself and issues of broadcast, documentation, etc. should there be live audio/ video? should there be a chat screen for people to write questions from off-site? what about the idea liz brought up for a quickie publication based on notes or minutes?
23 Jan 2010 3:47PM
I won't be able to make it tomorrow. I have prior commitments at the anarchist bookfair.
Best,
Zen

hi peeps,
i can't make it to tomorrow's noon meeting, but if any of you are planning on attending theory/practice later in the eve (7-9), it'd be great if you could speak a little to the drift. i've no doubt it will come up:)
