Isaac,
Both this class and a more advanced one sound like great ideas. Let's discuss more on Sat.

Hi Deborah,
This is going to be a fundamentals class - so I'm planning on doing lap joints, dowel joints and spline joints. We're going to use the table saw (dado blade, too), the band saw, miter saw, etc. I hadn't planned on doing the router.
If there's interest I'd love to do a more advanced class later. Maybe a workshop where we meet in advance to design something as a group which would require the techniques we want to go over?

Would it be possible to get more info on what tools and techniques we'll be looking at? Will we be discussing joinery techniques, router skills, etc? I have some woodworking experience I'm hoping to build off of.
Thanks!
5 Mar 2010 10:13AM
yep Kristen, I'll move you down.

Is it possible for me to get back in the 2-4pm session? Somehow I got switched to the earlier one in the past couple days, but the later one will be easier for me to make. Thanks so much - I'm looking forward to the class.
5 Mar 2010 8:25AM

Hi everyone,
Below is listed what sessions some of you will be in. If you name is not listed, it means that I didn't get the google form so please fill out again. Also, some of you put in your handle but not your name so I'm not entirely sure who paid and who filled out the form (if it is difficult to deduce your name from your handle please re-fill out the form). If you haven't paid yet, we are out of spots. Lastly, the overwhelming majority of people wanted four sessions so the classes will be held:
3/6
3/20
3/27
4/3
Session 1:12 - 2
Anette, mraaronfreeman, tingling, Karen, Megan, pentadactyl, Fabio Bernal, Joanie Ellen (you posted in both places so I put you in your second submission)
Session 2: 2 - 4
kristen st john, Julia Dzwonkoski, Adam Greenhouse, Deborah Sigel, NikitaPashenov, JimmyB, frannie
For the first session all you'll need is something to write with/on and if you have your own safety glasses, please bring them (we should have enough to cover if not!).
See everyone Saturday!

I'm sure you'll be posting something soon, but I'd like to get an idea sooner so....
what do we need to bring to class on the first day?

Where is this class being held? What part of Los Angeles?
25 Feb 2010 10:15PM
Hi everyone,
Sorry for not replying sooner. I am in my third city in three weeks and Isaac has also been traveling. Here are answers and new information about the class:
1. Everyone who has paid will be in the class! We have three or four more spots open if anyone else wants to join.
2. We will be holding two sessions. One will be held from 12-2pm, the other from 2-4pm.
3. Isaac unexpectedly will not be available on the 13th (our second session). This means we have two options. We hold a fourth session on April 3rd or we only hold three sessions but make the last one twice as long. The early session on that day would run from 12-4pm and the late session would be from 4-8pm.
4. I created a google form to figure out all of this. Please fill out all the questions as soon as you can and I'll send out a list of who is in what session and what the plan is for the fourth session: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dHZ4ZUE2N2ZiMWcwUjlmeFl5...
5. Isaac should also be chiming in soon with more details about the designs/class.
Thanks everyone! And we still have three or four spots open if others want to join (anetteshirinian, $50 covers all the sessions!). Let me know too if you have any issues with the google form (this is my first one).
Best,
Caleb
25 Feb 2010 8:41PM
does the $50 cover all classes or just one?
25 Feb 2010 5:50PM
Yes I'd like to double check that I'm in the 3/6 class as well. Thanks!
25 Feb 2010 3:57PM
I know the first session hasn't even begun yet, but is there any further news on a possible second class scheduling for another month? I would like to advocate for that possiblity as March was one of the few months I couldn't make it, but otherwise, I certainly would have been in attendance, and would definitely sign up if another session were coordinated.
25 Feb 2010 1:05PM
Hi there,
I bought a spot in the class also.
I signed up for the March 6th session
but I just read the comments below and thought I should check.
Can you let me know if I'm in the 3/06
group or the second session of the class?
Thanks!
Jon

Hi, just checking in- am I in this session or are you setting up another one? I need to know so I can change my work schedule. Thanks! Megan
19 Feb 2010 8:49PM
My first class! I think I made the number ten spot, right? Anyways, I'm very excited.
5 Feb 2010 2:07PM
Hi Megan,
You were number 11! We will either slip you into the first batch or be scheduling another session to accommodate other folks who can't make it. Stay tuned!

5 Feb 2010 2:01PM
Hi, I submitted a payment last night for this class- did I make it into the first session?
5 Feb 2010 8:50AM
I would definitely be interested in taking a second round of this class! Sadly, I'll be gone all of March.
4 Feb 2010 11:29AM
hi,
there is only one spot left for the first 10 so there hasn't been any discussion on scheduling another session. If this first session fills up we'll figure out if we can do another one and I'll post something here to work our the details!

I know the idea had been broached of scheduling this class for March, and then again for a second session if there was enough interest. As I mentioned, I am absolutely interested, and may be able to attend in March (if there is still space) but if not, has there been any further discussion as to the scheduling of a second class?
4 Feb 2010 11:13AM
i just made a coffee table and it sucks. i would love to take this schools.
1 Feb 2010 10:44PM
I really wanted to take this!!! But I can't make it for March 6... which is probably the most important class right? Do you think I can still take this and then somehow learn everything from class 1 in class 2? Or should I just wait for the next class?
28 Jan 2010 5:53PM
Sue to tha Z I E (good user name :),
you need to click on the buy-it-now button and submit an online payment to reserve a spot.

25 Jan 2010 11:11AM
I'm sure this will sound silly, but is the "i'm interested" list equivalent to the sign-up list? Or is it the first ten to submit an online payment? Because I am absolutely interested in taking this workshop, and would like to secure a spot in the class. Is my "I'm interested" too late?
25 Jan 2010 11:08AM
Hi everyone,
Sorry for the delay. Had to figure out some details and timeline. The course will be taught by and held at Isaac Resnikoff's studio located in Highland Park/Lincoln Heights. It will take place over four sessions, Saturdays in March (slight possibility they may be Sundays), which are broken down below. There will be a limit of ten students so that everyone actually gets time (and supervision) with the equipment. Also, related to the equipment, The Public School and/or Isaac will not be insuring the students and everyone will need to sign a waiver.
Since there is a lot of people interested, Isaac has offered to do two sessions if more than 10 people signup. That being said, I would signup to make sure you get a spot as if there aren't enough to hold a second section we will only have the first 10 folks there.
The class fee will be $50. This will cover materials and everyone will leave the class with either a chair or a desk and the knowledge on how to make more!!
I've set the class for noon but this may change as we get closer to the date and if we are holding multiple sessions.
Class 1:
An overview of the tools to be used in shop and to go over the furniture designs and methods for constructing the pieces being built. The pieces, most likely a chair and a table, will be designed around maximizing materials and teaching several different furniture building techniques. The furniture designs will act as a sort of pedagogical tool in the construction of furniture. These designs will be posted to the class site soon to look at and discuss.
Class 2:
Devoted to prepping and cutting materials using the band saw, table saw, drills, etc..
Class 3:
Build build build.
Class 4:
Build some more and finish!

hi everyone,
Met with a friend last night who will be able to teach and has a space that can be used. Will post more information by the end of the weekend!

Space, insurance, tools - all good points Laura. Fantastic that you sourced a teacher.
I propose that everyone interested in the class (you are reading this message so that means YOU) keep their eyes open on the street. In my neighborhood, unoccupied buildings are not uncommon. Amongst the collective - I'm confident a space will present itself.
I know nothing of insurance. A wood-working safety pre-class perhaps?
As for tools - I have a few but I'm hoping as a group we could share, borrow, trade and so on. http://neighborgoods.net/ might be a resource as well.

I took a machine woodworking class at Otis* this past fall from which I learned some very basic woodworking skills. I also acquired a small variety of woodworking tools (e.g., japanese hand saws, chisels, clamps) and I have a couple excerpts from books on joints & woodworking techniques that I could upload & share. It will be difficult to hold a class like this without access to multiple table saws and a planer. I know that my former teacher has been looking for a shared space for woodworking outside of the private art school setting. He has reached a few hiccups in regards to finding a proper space and insurance costs.
Does anybody have an idea of a space where this class could be held and does anybody have big power saws?
*The Otis class is taught every fall and spring semester - one night a week for 10 weeks - but it is somewhat costly.
7 Jan 2010 4:49PM
Very much interested in this class. Anyone know some furniture designers in L.A. we can recruit to teach?
5 Jan 2010 1:29PM
Absolutely interested! I've wanted to attend an open workshop to build things for a few years now. Shared tools and space post art school. Perfect!
2 Dec 2009 12:41PM
I am definitely interested.
Any idea who may teach?
