Writing a Business Plan (Business Plan Class 101)
proposed by Phil Glau

This class will cover how to write and prepare a business plan for either raising outside capital for your venture, or doing a 'sanity' check for your own idea prior investing your own time and money.

Business Plans are simple conceptually. The difficult part is all the homework that needs to be done in order to prepare the final plan. This course will cover the simple parts so that when you do your own due diligence you'll know how to incorporate it into a business plan that is readable and understandable to an audience other than yourself. Sure you have a great idea, but can you prove it to your investors with a plan showing how you are going to execute it in a way that doesn't bankrupt everybody involved??

We'll cover: Marketing Plan, Management & Operations, Competition Analysis, Product/Service Plan, Growth Plan, Operations and Controls, Contingency Plan and Schedule.  While it' unlikely we'll be able to cover everything in the same depth as a multi-year MBA program, we should be able to hit the highlights enough to get you on the right path.

I would like a re-lecture and/or Q&A. I've been out of town and sorry I missed last week.

Hi, last week's class was rather thinly attended. I'll be posting the notes from Class three for those who missed it. Class 4 was to be a Q&A for those who had done their independent research and were ready to start writing and needed some guidance on their plans.

If you really want to come down on the 14th, we can 'redo' the third lecture, but we'll only do this if you specifically request this in the class comments, but otherwise, it seems a little pointless to have a fourth class unless you've done some of your independent research.

If more than 1 person requests a 're-lecture' or would like to do the Q&A, I'm happy to come down. Please let me know in the comments section.

I'll post the 3rd Day Notes this evening when I get home from work (3/11/2010)

Hey Phil,

I somehow had my calendar marked for this past sunday's class at 6pm when, foolishly, it called for class at 1pm. I was hoping to get caught up on what i regrettably missed.

Prepping for the final classes. Did anybody do the 'homework' assignment of researching their ideas? Let me know if you did as it will help me prep the last two classes.

Sample Plan (I wrote this back in 1989, so keep that in mind, it's a bit dated.)

Here's a "Shell Document" for the outline structure of a plan (you'll notice its pretty much the outline for the plan above.)

Hey Phil and folks,
Just realized this is a holiday weekend and had made plans to skip town awhile ago. Won't be in class Sunday.
Can someone post any pertinent info I miss?
Thanks and see you in March.
Jared.

Take a look at this site for some sample business plans. There's probably one similar to what ever business you want to start

I'll try and post some 'template books' as well prior to class.
