hi everybody,

As this proposal involves several technical aspects (electronics, programming, Linux) and hardware of non-trivial cost, we'll start things off with a one-time class that will be structured as a show-and-tell introduction to the gumstix platform.

We'll use a gumstix Verdex motherboard with consoleLCD expansion board.. topics to cover include:

- linux setup
- connecting to gumstix (serial communication)
- cross-compiling with buildroot
- replacing the filesystem and u-boot
- hello gumstix: compiling and testing some programs
- graphics program examples with output to the LCD

If there is interest in spending more time on certain topics/details, we can schedule additional workshop(s) after the first class.

Something that may be a little confusing in the class title: though we can refer to gumstix as computers, these are not something you will normally expect to run a desktop GUI operating system on. The primary interface to gumstix boards is through command terminal (serial or telnet/ssh over the network). An LCD kit became available recently, so we'll be taking a look at how to get some output on the screen.

To sum up, gumstix is a powerful Linux-based platform (in a tiny form-factor) that you might consider for your next robot or art installation project, probably not your next PC. For more information, check out http://www.gumstix.com
