8-bit Lab: Italians Do It Better
proposed by nik

Arduino has become a popular platform for learning electronics, but it is not magic. In this one-session workshop, students will learn how to make and program their own microprocessor circuits. We'll also talk about the variety of Arduino clones out there and other families of widely available, inexpensive chips.

Darn! I just signed on to enroll and saw that it was canceled. I'll keep an eye out if this gets rescheduled and remember to register early. :)

We regret to announce that this class has been canceled due to insufficient enrollment. As you know, we try to schedule classes that show a high enough "number of people interested", but this is not a perfect way to predict how many students will actually register. Unfortunately in this case, the low number of registered students could not justify the preparation time that goes into a class, ordering of electronics components, etc.

Thanks again to those who took the time to answer our question form last week (http://la.thepublicschool.org/note/1465), it was encouraging to note that class fee was not the issue for anyone here. For students who have registered, we will be refunding your class fee in the next couple of days.

If you are still interested in this class, please don't hesitate to post your comments, feedback, suggestions so we could consider re-offering it in the future.

There is a note (new TPS feature!) posted in regard to the question form that was sent out to those on the interest list who chose not to register for this class. Please take a moment to take a look at it here: http://la.thepublicschool.org/note/1465

Reminder: there are a few more days to register for this class with a 10% discount! Follow the "buy now" google button on the class webpage (http://la.thepublicschool.org/class/1342) to register. If you have any questions about the class, don't hesitate to post in the comments section of the page.

To put it briefly, this workshop will be a good introduction to making custom microprocessor circuits without relying on the Arduino. We'll go through the process of building our own "breadboarduino" circuit and programming it so that it works with the Arduino IDE. We'll then discuss how the Atmel microprocessor can be programmed in straight-up C language and the variety of chips you could consider for your next circuit, including non-Atmel parts.

While this class is open to beginners, if you have a little bit of digital electronics experience and are at a point where you might, for instance, consider building your own really cheap microprocessor boards, multiple circuits that talk to each other, or just curious about going beyond Arduino, this class is definitely for you! :)

Once this class is scheduled (it is likely to go through soon, given the interest level) and there are enough people registered, The Public School will provide the necessary supplies. As usual, we recommend that the students bring their own laptops to class.
